How to Update Your Existing Content With Workover

Last updated July 2, 2024

So, you have an existing post on your website and are looking to update that post.

Note: We are working on streamlining the process of updating existing content beyond how this currently works.

For now, here’s the process you’d use to update an existing post. ????

1 – Log in to your Workover dashboard

First off, you’ll need to sign in to your existing Workover account (or create one if you haven’t already) – to do so, simply head to:

https://wpdocsync.com/app/login

2 – Head to the content tab for your site

Once logged in, switch to the site you’re working on using the site switcher here:

Or from the dashboard’s main page:

Then (if you aren’t taken there by default), navigate to the Content tab:

From here, you’ll currently see a list of all the content that was previously synchronized to this website from Google Docs using Workover.

3 – Hit “add new” and synchronize the new version of the post you’d like to update (as you would with a completely new post)

This step is the same as synchronizing a post to WordPress for the first time.

To do so, hit Add New and then select Google Drive to WordPress.

You’ll then be taken to choose your file from your Google Drive account:

Locate the new version of the post you’re looking to update and click Create post.

When prompted, proceed to enter all of your desired post details.

Note: For now, you should append -new to your permalink since it is not possible to use the same permalink (if you don’t do this, the number 2 will also be automatically appended).

Once you’re happy with the post details, hit Next to view your final preview and then Next a second time to synchronize the post over to WordPress (as a draft).

At this point, you’ll have two versions of the post on your website:

  1. The published version that you’re looking to update still published.
  2. The new drafted version we’ve just created with Workover.

4 – Head over to your WordPress dashboard to publish your post

Until we fully automate this process, the process of updating an existing post involves a couple of extra steps. We’re planning on releasing a new feature to make the process of updating existing content in WordPress significantly easier.

For now, head to WordPress.

Locate the two posts, one draft and one published.

You’ll now need to manually unpublish the old version of the post and delete it. Once deleted, immediately publish the new version at the same URL as the old one was published.

Evidently, these final steps are quite messy and would also mean that any comments (if you have comments enabled on your site) would be lost. But for now, this is the process of updating content that was not originally synced with Workover. Once a post is synced using Workover, updating it is significantly easier and can be done in a matter of clicks (as it should be!), but for now, for content created directly in WP (or before you started using Workover), updating it requires a few extra manual steps.
